2006 BrANCH Conference at St Catherine's College, Oxford, 22-24 September

This year the annual BrANCH conference will be held at St. Catherine’s College, Oxford, from Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th September.
The programme concentrates on two themes:

  • The Rise of Democracy, Jefferson to Lincoln;
  • Slavery, Civil War, and Death.

The full conference charge for residents covers the conference fee, plus bed and breakfast, morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea, a wine reception, and dinner for each of two days, from 4pm on Friday 14th to 6pm on Sunday 16th. Resident accommodation is in single en-suite study bedrooms, though there are also a few twin en-suite study bedrooms available at a slightly reduced price for those sharing. The number of residential places in St. Catherine’s is currently limited to sixty, but we may be able to find rooms for latecomers in other colleges. The non-resident charge covers all the above except for bed and breakfast.

The conference charges are: Resident, single room: £180 ($360)
Resident, sharing twin room: £150 ($300)
Non-resident: £80 ($160)
Those attending will be expected to be, or to become, members of BrANCH;
membership costs £10 p.a. (£5 for graduates).

We are able to offer a limited number of bursaries to British-based graduate students (including those just doctored and yet to take up their first post), worth £130 to residents and £60 to non-residents. We reserve the right to ask resident bursars to share twin rooms and/or take accommodation in other colleges. If you wish to apply, please indicate on the form and send a deposit for £50 (£20 non-resident); and if you are not currently a paid-up graduate member of BrANCH, you should include an extra £5 as your subscription.

There is some (limited) car parking available at St. Catherine’s. Click here for travel directions

Those traveling from the United States should note that Heathrow is the nearest international airport, and there is a good bus service to Oxford. (Gatwick is less convenient and the buses less frequent). Anyone planning to return to the United States on the Sunday will probably miss the last morning of the conference. In the case of those who plan to delay their return until the Monday, it should be possible for us to arrange overnight accommodation in a college, we hope in St. Catherine’s. Please indicate on the form if you are interested.

Inquiries should be addressed to Dr. Jay Sexton, Corpus Christi College, Oxford OX1 4JF, UK,
or at jay.sexton@corpus-christi.oxford.ac.uk.

We look forward to seeing you in Oxford in September.

Richard Carwardine, Donald Ratcliffe and Jay Sexton,
Conference Secretaries
