Grants for Postgraduate Research

The Peter Parish Memorial Fund has been established to commemorate the late Professor Peter J. Parish. Its aim is to help the next generation of British American historians to embark successfully on a career of scholarly historical research into the nineteenth-century United States. The Fund Committee welcomes applications for grants to help with the cost of travel to the United States for the purpose of research or participating in a conference. It is envisaged that grants will not normally exceed 500.


Eligibility

Students registered for a research degree at any UK university whose primary scholarly interest is in any aspect of the history of the United States between 1787 and 1917 are encouraged to apply.

Application procedure

There are two rounds of applications each year. The deadlines are JANUARY 1 and JULY 1. After each deadline we will announce the awards within a month.

We encourage you to submit your application as an email attachment. Please send Word files by email to Dr Adam Smith, Secretary of the Peter Parish Memorial Fund at a.i.p.smith@ucl.ac.uk
If it is not possible to email your application you may post FIVE COPIES to:Dr Adam Smith, History Department, University College London, Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT4.
There is no application form. All Applications must include:

  • A Curriculum Vitae
  • In no more than one side of A4, an outline of the nature of the proposed research activity to be supported by the grant (including the details of archives to be visited and, in the case of applications for conference funding, an abstract of your paper and, where appropriate, of the session in which you will participate). Please also explain how this research activity relates to any larger project, for example your PhD dissertation, in which you are engaged.
  • The estimated expenditure likely to be incurred, itemised in as much detail as possible.
  • Any other sources of funding which have been secured or applied for.
  • The names and addresses, including email addresses, of TWO referees who may be contacted by the committee.

Conditions of Award

Applications will only be considered for future expenditure.

Upon completion of the research, grant recipients should provide a short final report to the committee.

Grant recipients should acknowledged the support of the Peter Parish Memorial Fund in any dissertation or published work resulting from research aided by the fund.
